Cowboy Campout

When:  April 23-25, 2010
Where:  Baugh Family Ranch near Rosanky, TX

  • Cowboy cooking: Cook in a dutch oven or over an open fire (no stoves); Make it from scratch
  • Campfire: Cowboy poetry, stories and songs
  • Service project:  Cut down dead trees and stack for firewood
» Grub
  • All meals will be cooked cowboy style in a dutch oven or over an open fire (no stoves) and made from scratch
  • Each patrol will cook one meal for the whole troop
  • Suggestions: Homemade biscuits, baked beans (from dry beans), shepard's pie, roasted chicken, fresh apple cobbler (no canned fruit), stew, ...
  • Grubmasters should work with an ASM to figure out how much to buy
» Packing List:
  • Scoutmaster challenge: Bedroll pack (no backpack or sleeping bag); pack belongings in a blanket; roll it up; tie off the ends
  • Cowboy attire: boots, hat, bandanna

09:00 Lesson on “cowboy knots”: coiling a rope, bowline (one handed bowline), tautline hitch, cow hitch, clove hitch, throwing a lasso - TBD
09:30 Lesson on dutch oven cooking (care of ovens, coals, etc) - Instructors (Bill, Keith)
09:45 Horseshoe competition -TBD
11:45 Lunch patrol starts preparing lunch
12:30 Eat lunch
13:00 Clean up
13:30 Advancement time or fishing - Fishing Guide (Joseph, Neal)
